So, the commercialization of the holidays is nothing new.....

Napping at work

Ok, it may be good for your heart, but who can find customers that will let you nap?

Blogged

I am using Windows Live Writer to type up my blog posts.  I love this tool, because it has spell checking.  Anyone who helped raise me can tell you that I need all the spelling help I can get.

I noticed something that really bothers me.  The spell check in Microsoft's blog writing tool does not recognize "blogged" as a word.  Does that seem right to you?

Teflon......

.....the best thing to ever happen to scrambled eggs.

That is the first thing that comes to my mind after cooking up an egg sandwich for dinner tonight.

So, what is the strangest thing about this blog post?  The fact that it says that I was cooking!  Ok, so that probably does not seem like a strange thing to most of you, but the truth is that this family for a long time has not done much cooking.

I guess I have not blogged about it, but we have been in a new house for a while now, and it has a kitchen that we like to cook in.  As a matter of fact, the Lady Avenger and I have actually been cooking together! (Alright, I mean food you people).  I must say, I have really enjoyed it.

That reminds me, I guess I owe the world some house pictures.  I will get those up soon.  I think I will put up some before and after photos for you.  It will give you a good idea of the incredible change this new house is for us.

So, anyway, lets hear it for Teflon, or if your a Teflon hater, this is your chance to perpetuate several Teflon urban myths.

RAIN!

I know not everyone has had a break from the heat yet, but we finally had rain last night.  WOOHOO!

It is official, I am famous

Many celebraties have felt their break through moment was the day they were a guest on Oxcast, and I have finally had my shot.  Check out my first pitiful attempt at podcasting here.

The Oxcast web site should be up and running now.

What is that on my skin....

....oh wait, that's a sun tan!  I was shocked to find yesterday that I am actally the proud owner of tan lines.  As a matter of fact the whole crew owns some of those these days, thanks to the pool we recently put up in the back yard.  It is not very big, but to the sidekicks it may as well be an ocean.  It is just hard to say how happy it has made the whole crew.

With that in mind I need to say a special thank you to Ox (of Oxcast fame) and Wookie.  These two guys gave up their evening several days ago to come move 6 TONS of sand at my house and level it for this pool.  Guys, thanks a lot.  All you hard work has made the Balding Avenger Corps a happy place to be.

Another one bites the dust

Tonight I took my Accounting final.  I think it went alright.  With that marks the start of my final term in the program.  One more semester and I will have my degree!  Boy, am I glad, I am ready to be finished.  Classes will end in November, and the actual graduation will happen in mid December.  Just a few more months and I can stop thinking about school and start focusing on family and work more.  It will be so nice........

A long dry spell

So I have not posted in a looooooong time, and I am starting to hear about it from friends and family.  It is true, I have not had much substantial to say for several weeks.  School, work, and family have kept me very busy, and a little be mentally taxed.  For me blogging is not like keeping a journal where just the fact that I am posting results in some sort of emotional release.  Instead I find blogging to be a mental effort, one that I enjoy, but an effort none the less.

When the rest of life gets hectic, I tend to let all the extras go, and unfortunatly this blog falls into that catagory.  The good news is you have not been missing a lot.  Work, my school, kids scool, wife's school, week end, home work...rinse and repeat.

With that said, I know that many of you are interested in the little details of ordinary life here, and recently the Lady Avenger and I did take a weekend trip for our 12 year aniversary.  So there are a few things lately worth writing about.  I will try to give you the delayed reports on that stuff soon.

Wow, don't let this be you...

Here is a good reason to make sure and raise your daughters to feel like they are smart, beautiful, and confident.  This girl was never locked up, never forced to stay.  She was in an emotional prison.  Maybe if this unfortunate woman had somehow made it to her teenage years with a little bit more self-esteem, she would have never been lured into this man's possession in the first place.

Talking about NPR : Katrina Stirs Up Issue of Lead Levels in Soil

I listened to this report on the radio today.  I was shocked to hear that prior to Katrina one quarter of children from poorer parts of the city had lead blood levels high enough to cause learning disorders.  25%!!! That seems huge to me.  It would seem that these lead levels have been that way for decades, and that contamination of this type is typical in poor urban areas.

Is it possible that poor urban areas remain poor decade after decade because 25% of the children from those areas are disadvantaged in life from the start due to lead?!?

The Blizzard of '06

In case you have not been checking the Balding Avenger weather link, we have finally had some real winter arrive in my neck of the woods.  After enduring the warmest, mildest winter on record in Arkanasas, there is now 3 to 5 inches of snow on the ground.  I know for some of you yankees, that does not sound like much, but south of the Mason-Dixon line this is a blizzard!

Talking about Google Heads to Court to Protect Users

Don't get me wrong, I am all for protecting children from mature content on the internet.  Already I wonder how I am going to manage those issues as the Sidekicks get older, and the oldest now is only 7.  With that said, I really think the goverment is painting with a broad brush here in their requests for search records.  Perhaps if they narrowed it down to specific searches that may give mature results to children, but this feels like a witch hunt.  Asking for a full weeks data including all searches by all persons seems like an obvious invasion of privacy.  Back when I was a police office I took privacy issues and the Bill of Rights very, very seriously.  I would agonize over every search, stop, and arrest.  Do I really have a good reason?  I wonder if anyone is asking that sort of question at the Department of Justice.  Now, before we get the pitch forks and torches out and march on the capitol, I do believe that the systems of checks and balances are catching up with the governments attempts to grow executive power.  In the mean time, the Googles of the world will have to watch out for us.

Talking about We'll Miss You, Alan Greenspan

I hope the new chairman will be able to keep up as well as Mr. Greenspan.  He was an amazing economist who never lost his love for digging into the data, and had a great understanding of what modern technology really means to our economy.

Talking about Drug Dealer Runs From Cops

So if you would like a great example of what day to day life for a cop is, this is a great clip.  It shows how hard it is to subdue a person without hurting them.  Also, it shows how scary it can be.  Notice how this dopper yells at his buddy to come help him with the cops.  Also, notice that this loser was willing to put what I assume is his child through watching this all happen, you can hear her cry in the backgroud, because of drugs.  To top it all off, on officer gets sprayed with pepper spray along with the bad guy.  Seems being a cop over seas can be just as trying as here in the states.

You better think.....

The holidays are over and time for some new tunes.  What better way to start the year then with The Blues Brothers.  We had a very nice holiday break.  The kids aunt Mary visited.  We managed to spend some time with all the various family that is around us.  Spent a lot of time goofing off, playing, and breaking in the new Playstation 2 that the kids (yeah right, the kids) got for Christmas.  We also took the whole crew to see The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.  It was a very good movie, I reccommend it.  Of course, it looked amazing.  All of the mythical creatures seemed totally real, and the children in the film were great actors.

I think we are starting the new year off right.  MudTreasure is doing very well and on the tail end of beating her cancer.  At work a big project wrapped up just in time for the holidays, and I get to start new in the office with neat upgrades and rollouts (yes, I am a geek).

Other then that there has not been a ton going on in the Avenger's world, which I must say has been kind of nice.....
